Del Mar Picks 7/18/07

Del Mar:

Race 1: Unusual Suspect- Nice numbers coming into this event and should get a good trip with the speed thats in the gate with him. Smith had a great last week at Hollywood and looks to get Del Mar off to an even better start. 5/1 ML

Race 2: Lady Leftennant-easy work over the track on the 13th of July and ran a much improved race against these in her last race. 7/2 ML

Race 3: Coast Guard- The fact that this horse is a decent price on the ML is a testament to the quality of this maiden race. You have a half to Roman Ruler and El Corredor in the 1 horse who sold for 4.6 million as a yearling and the 7 horse who is a 3/4 brother to Floridia Derby and Bluegrass winner Harlan's Holiday. But the 5 horse my pick Coast Guard has a 1/52 bullet over the new polytrack in his most recent work and is by the good first out sire Stormy Atlantic. 4/1 ML

Race 4: Law Breaker- First-time on the turf for this son of Silver Deputy out of a Kingmambo mare and has good early pace, though I don't believe he'll be on the lead. Gets my money. 5/1 ML

Race 5: Cool Hand Lucca- Second time in for a tag and a slight drop in class should do the trick for this horse. 5/2 ML

Race 6: Naughtylilhottie- Baffert sends out this filly. She's been running against better and gets talamo back aboard for this trip. Pace looks good for her. 9/2 ML

Race 7: Yario- the bris PP's I have say this horse was off a bit slow, no threat...but that wasn't quite true. He did break slow, but cut over to the rail right after the start and saved ground to the middle of the backstretch, he made a nice move along the rail and even ran passed eventual winner Worldly, but a horse in front of him suddenly stopped and did the moon walk to the back of the pack. This horse was making a move that I've seen win many turf races, he just didn't have the luck. Couple that with what I feel is a easier group, and you have a nice selection. 4/1 ML

Race 8: Sabio- this horse is a pure pace play, he's got 21flat and 43 flat type speed and could use that to his advantage from his inside post if the new surface is playing for speed. He's got two sharp works coming into this race and his connection's thought enough of him to ship him to EVD in Louisiana for a 5f stakes race in his last start. 10/1 ML

Race 9: Miss Josiey Wales- This filly was claimed out of her last race from Mullins and while that isn't always the best play back, she goes to Gallagher's barn and for me thats more of a sideway's move. She won her last race in easy fashion, had her ears pricked all the way down the backstretch and circled the field around the turn. 8/1 ML

Looks like a nice opening day card. May the luck be with you.
